Now hiring:  Solar Apprentice

This is a part-time, permanent position, likely leading to full-time. It is based out of our Murphy, NC office. Note we require answers to specific questions in your cover letter when applying, as described below.

Job overview


  • About 70% of your time will be spent assisting in physical installations of solar panels, racking and other components of ground- and roof-mounted solar panel (PV) arrays while complying with company standards and safety procedures.


  • About 30% of your time will be spent assisting with operations functions of the solar business as needed. Lots of variety, includes indoor (office/computer/warehouse) and outdoor (maintenance/handy man) work. Plus, ongoing technical learning on how solar PV systems are designed, how to install them, and how to repair them. No prior knowledge needed, but we do require a positive attitude and a capacity and desire for learning.


General Requirements

  • MUST be 18 years old or over

  • MUST be able to pass initial drug screening, criminal background check, and random ongoing drug screenings during employment. (Please do NOT apply if you are unable to pass these tests on an ongoing basis.)

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance

  • Daily cell phone access

  • Reliable transportation (your own vehicle) plus valid driver’s license

  • Legally eligible to work in the United States

  • Able to work irregular, sometimes long hours

  • Strong attention to detail, pride of ownership in your tasks

  • Strong work ethic, team player, positive attitude

  • Excellent work and personal references

  • Fast learner, willing to be coached

  • Comfortable working in an industry that changes frequently

  • Analytical problem solver looking to learn more from others

  • Lots of drive and self-motivation



Physical/Construction Requirements


  • Able to perform tasks in all weather conditions (heat, rain, wind, etc) including multiple hours in direct sun/heat with no shade. This is a very hot, physical job that requires extended kneeling, bending, squatting, and walking.

  • Able to comfortably lift 45 lbs overhead

  • Able to comfortably lift, handle and carry heavy, large, and awkwardly shaped objects (e.g. solar panels)

  • Able to climb ladders up to 25 ft high and work on inclined roof surfaces (you must be okay working at heights for extended periods)

  • Able to lift, carry, push, pull, bend, stoop, crouch, rotate, reach, kneel, grip, on both even and uneven surfaces

  • Physical mobility of upper and lower body

  • Able to climb and maintain balance on stairs, ladders

  • Able to adequately hear and respond to voice commands, alerts, and alarms

  • Must have visual acuity and depth perception consistent with that required to work at heights and on uneven surfaces, differentiate between colors on signage, and perform essential duties of position

  • Understanding of basic construction principles and basic construction tools, e.g. string line, level, drill

  • No problem getting your hands dirty and doing the gritty work that comes along with the job


Office & Computer Skills

  • Able to use MS Office; familiarity with Excel, Word and how to email

  • Comfortable with computers; able to quickly learn new apps and software systems with training and support

  • Able to quickly research topics on internet using search engines

  • Good basic math skills (e.g. basic algebra, basic trigonometry)

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Good written and spoken English

  • Good customer service skills, on phone and in person


Preferred but NOT required


  • Associate degree or higher in engineering, electronics, industrial systems, or similar

  • Additional software experience e.g. Adobe Acrobat, design software

  • Solar PV installation experience

  • Additional carpentry, construction, roofing, mechanical or electrical experience

  • OSHA 10

Wage: starting wage from $13 to $16 per hour depending on skills and experience. Potential for higher wage as you learn new skills.
